A tape measure & a minute

How to measure

Stand naturally in light clothing. Keep a soft tape level and snug without pulling it tight.

Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your bust.

Waist: Measure around your natural waist, usually the narrowest part of your torso.

Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, with feet together.

Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam to the hem on a well-fitting pair of pants.

Fit tips by clothing category

Tops

Shirts, blouses, polos, sweaters & cardigans

Start with bust and waist. For fitted sleeves, compare shoulder width and sleeve length with a top you already love.

Dresses & One-Pieces

Dresses, jumpsuits & rompers

Check bust, waist and hips together. For jumpsuits and rompers, also compare torso length, rise and inseam when provided.

Bottoms

Pants, jeans, leggings, shorts, skirts & skorts

Use waist and hips, then check rise and inseam or skirt length. A denim waist label is not a universal dress-size conversion.

Outerwear

Jackets, coats, blazers & vests

Check bust and shoulders, allowing room for the layers you plan to wear. Compare sleeve length and garment length.

Swimwear

One-pieces, bikinis, tankinis & cover-ups

For one-pieces, consider bust, waist, hips and torso length. For separates, check top and bottom sizes individually; use the brand’s chart for cup-sized styles.

Golf & Activewear

Performance tops, golf dresses, skorts & active bottoms

Use bust and waist for tops, and waist and hips for bottoms. Check fabric stretch and leave comfortable room to swing, bend and move.

Letter sizes, plus sizes & petite labels

XS, S, M, L, XL and XXL are brand-specific. Do not assume XXL and 2X, or XL and 1X, have the same fit. Plus sizes can use different proportions from straight sizes.

Petite labels usually describe shorter proportions, not simply a smaller body size. For petite, tall and plus-size items, compare the actual garment’s length, rise, sleeves and measurements. Use the brand’s own chart when available.

Compare with clothing you already own

Lay a similar, well-fitting garment flat without stretching it. Compare its measurements with those shown in the listing.

Pit to pit: Measure straight across beneath the armholes. Doubling this gives an approximate garment chest circumference, which includes the garment’s fit allowance.

Waist: Measure across the waistband; double for approximate circumference. Check whether elastic measurements are relaxed or stretched.

Length: Compare shoulder-to-hem for tops and dresses, waistband-to-hem for skirts, and crotch-to-hem for pants.

Body and garment measurements are different. Allow for the fit you prefer and the fabric’s stretch.
